Review of Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011) by Alex C — 01 Sep 2012
Not your typical Takashi Miike movie. There's not surreal silliness there to break up the serious tone. There's no hermaphrodite schoolgirls or exploding heads or necrophilia. What there is is a touching nod to Kurosawa in this story-within-a-story about honour and sacrifice.
There's some implied gore and definite eye-watering moments of nastiness, but this doesn't distract from the touching tale within. A welcome change from the modern master himself.
