Review of Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (2011) by Sandy R — 23 Sep 2012
Takashi Miike's gorgeously mounted and superbly acted samurai revenge tragedy. It is set in 17th-century Japan, and was also the subject of a classic 1962 movie by Masaki Kobayashi. This shares similar themes of revenge, honour and disgrace.
Miike's film is sumptuously photographed with excellent cinematography. It contains the intelligent and graceful traits that are synonymous with a large body of his work. The plot is fairly predictable and more like a classic fable but this film is more of a character driven piece about the loss of honour in such an honourable period of Japanese history.
