Review of Happythankyoumoreplease (2011) by Marlan M — 29 Nov 2011
The music and its use reminded me of Garden State, and the quirkiness was kinda stereotypical indie film fair. I enjoyed it, though, because it had some good writing. There are three stories going on in this film, but only two of them really seem to fit together.
The third one felt kinda just thrown in there and probably could have even survived on its own as a (kinda boring) short film. I really wanted to love this movie, but it doesn't do more than play at the surface.
The main story with the guy and the kid was really interesting, and I wanted to see more of where that might go, but I guess that's not what the movie was really about so I get that. I mainly couldn't really get into it beyond a passing fondness probably because the characters never felt completely dished out.
You get the idea that they have problems and have insecurities and are kinda childish, but you don't really feel like you know why they are that way, or what specific problems and anxieties they have.
They just kinda say "I have problems" and we accept they do because everyone has problems and it's more about overcoming those problems then it is what those problems are. I'm just rambling because I'm not sure how to say what I'm saying okay bye.
