Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Stefania . — 25 May 2009
Mike Leigh does it again with this delightfully funny and uncomfortable comedy. No one writes characters like Leigh and Happy-Go-Lucky has some of his finest character drama yet. Any film that climaxes with a silent response, gets my vote for mature and economical screenwriting.
The driving teacher's pain is both frightening and completely engrossing. This is where Poppy hits her brick wall. Also, the supporting character of the homeless person is a definitive Leigh moment.
The empathy and honesty within that one scene is worth a thousand Hollywood emotional cliches.
