Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Kathleen M — 13 Jun 2009
The first 40 mins are almost torturous, but if you trust yourself into the hands of Leigh and Hawkins, something happens. I'm still trying to articulate what it is, but it all begins to work, the gears--no that's too mechanical-- rather, we see enough paper thin layers, enough and what is revealed is a living breathing portrait.
Poppy shows us depths and an uncanny dangerous (but not stupid) generosity. David couldn't get through the first 1/2 hour (and I can hardly blame him) and made some comment about how annoying Poppy was when the film ended.
And I snapped, having become, without my awareness, fiercely protective of her.
