Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Tina C — 20 Jun 2009
After seeing I-don't-know-how-many character studies about social outcasts and the like, it's a relief to see one on a personality that's the polar opposite of the Travis Bickle-type.
Sally Hawkins and Director Mike Leigh create a memorable, charming, frustrating character in eternal optimist Poppy. I don't know if I would have responded as positively to the film as I did if it wasn't for the last half hour where she's exposed more and more as a fully-formed human being and not the cartoon (as entertaining as it is) she is for the preceding 80 mins.
