Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Pat G — 11 Jul 2009
One more best actress nominee in Sally Hawkins. Mike Leigh is a filmmaker that many (including myself) have a hard time following, which is probably why it was not a big hit. This is a much more accessible film. Thankfully, the characters and story are allowed to develop without overly complicating the movie.
I kept changing my mind if Poppy was eclectic, immature, nuts, or just maybe she already figured out life is to be enjoyed regardless of what's going on around you. Her driving instructor seems easier to read at first, but as the story progresses, his issues evolve and we aren't sure where he's going.
Like Richard Jenkins, in The Visitor, this is above all about superb acting but in a completely different role. Jenkins is introspective, where Hawkins emotions are on display for the world to see and inspired by creativity, humor, and energy.
As a side note, the British dialect here is thick and tough at times. Don't be afraid to use English subtitles on DVD if your ear has trouble picking up some of the lines.
