Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Tija F — 21 Jul 2009
Such a disappointment. Although the back of the DVD box suggests that this is "a joyous, feel-good film you'll find irresistable", I found it hard to resist turning it off. The characters and situations are bland and unexciting and Poppy's stupid laughter and irritating, imposing personality just make them a whole hell of a lot worse.
Eddie Marsan creates the most interesting character of the bunch, but Poppy and the script can't be anything more than patronizing to him, expecially in their final blow-out. Alexis Zegerman's character, if not more interesting, is at least more likable than Poppy; sadly, the movie was not built around her, but around Poppy, who grows more and more irritating with each minute.
I'm an optimist, but I found absolutely nothing likable or relatable about Poppy. Given her intrusive attitude and incessant chatter I can understand why so many people hate optimists. Her moments in the classroom (where she actually behaves like an adult and not like a loon) are the best and most likable parts of the film; unfortunately, they are few and far in-between.
