In many ways this does not feel at all like a Mike Leigh film, and that is probably a big part of what makes it appeal to a wider audience. Mike Leigh is simply not for everyone. Having seen several of his films, and liking them, I didn't feel at all as if this slight departure was a poor one.
Really Leigh took a much lighter idea and put his unique spin on it and the outcome is a wonderfully fun, free, and thoroughly different and interesting romantic film.
