Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Karen G — 03 Sep 2009
Ok, so "Happy-Go-Lucky" would surmise the persona of lead character Poppy as she floats through life. She exhibits a kind of preposterous level of breeziness almost making her seem unrealistic (like smiling saying 'i didn't even get to say goodbye' to stolen property).
Through the first move of this film I found myself not dissimilar to the males she encounters. I felt annoyed by her, wanting to just shut her up. It wasn't until about 45 minutes into the film that I could tolerate her, and another 20 till I began to root for her.
Her inability to take anything seriously starts a little over the top and I just wanted to wipe that smile from her face. Now, once I made it through all that I started to see how honest she actually is.
Her character does a lot of growing up through the course of this film, really doing a good job to smoothly transition her character rather than just dump and extreme event and shift her entirely and abruptly.
I did get the sense that she was more wise than she put on, as she collectively diffuses conflicts and handles extreme personalities quite studiously. I did take something from this film, maybe to approach life a little more collected and optimistically.
But I did not take away a feeling of great satisfaction at having watched this film.
