Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by David S — 02 Nov 2009
What initially seems like a trifle develops into a deep examination of teaching and of happiness. Poppy's attitude seems at first to be a symptom of innocence or stupidity. Leigh's direction and Hawkins' performance reveal how deep Poppy's belief in the fundamental values of patience and joy run, examining (while not being too expository) where her attitudes developed.
The scenes between Poppy and driving instructor Scott anchor the film, pitting two attitudes against one another and showing just how ill-founded a rage-filled life can be.
