Review of Happy-Go-Lucky (2008) by Adam B — 13 Aug 2010
Exceptional lead performance by Sally Hawkins (the perpetually upbeat Poppy) and insightful writing and direction by Leigh take what could have been a slight, amusing comedy and make it into a thought-provoking conversation generator on the paths people take and the attitudes they develop in their lives.
The scenes with Hawkins and Eddie Marsan (as Scott, the pessimistic, raging driving instructor) are particularly funny and eventually profound. A repeat viewer for all the strong scenes and nearly constant comic asides by the main character.
