Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Brendan N — 12 Oct 2017
The concept was good and the comparisons to Groundhog Day were there. My biggest issue is the weak reveal, I would have liked something a little more clever. The slasher film has been in need of reinvention after Scream came and revived a classic sub genre, this film sadly isn't it.
The film doesn't appear to be in any hurry and unlike Groundhog Day which feels like the lead is trapped for a long time, this lead is 16 days. The twist is the impact of the trauma she is sustaining over this time, this essentially takes some of the godly beats she could've learned.
The film is a good idea but not the best executed, I just thought this should've been a lot more fun and out there. I saw the killer early on and it's the stupid rule of filmmaking that annoys me, Seven never did it.
Good for the teen crowd but not a film to reinvent horror and it's slightly annoying, much like The Butterfly Effect to chaos theory, it's serviceable and will appeal to the masses but will only have a short shelf life.
