Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Jared S — 20 Nov 2018
When I saw a trailer for this film, I sighed âoh not another oneâ?. I was expecting a clichà (C) sorority sister style slasher which is well past their sell-by date. However, I was totally wrong and pleasantly surprised. The film has been described as âGroundhog Day meets screamâ? and that is exactly what Blumhouse has given us. Tree Gelbum is a spoiled and beautiful sorority sister who wakes up in the dorm room of fellow student, Carter. Embarrassed, she goes about her day by avoiding her father's calls, having a secret affair with her lecturer, hanging out with the stuck up Kappa sisters and trying to ignore Carter. As nighttime hits, Tree is ready to leave for a party until shes brutally murdered by a masked attacker. Surprised, tree wakes up and relives the same day again starting in Carter's bed and now she has to find out who might be her killer.
I am not sure whether this film is meant to have a humor aspect but it paid off, I say it is more a dark comedy than full-on horror but regardless its worth a watch and worth a hell of a lot more than the criticism it gets given.
