Review of Happy Death Day (2017) by Chris O — 08 Sep 2018
It is what it is.
Blumhouse (Split, Get Out, Whiplash) produces an original and inventive rewinding thriller in Happy Death Day, in which a college student (Jessica Rothe, La La Land) relives the day of her murder with both its unexceptional details and terrifying end until she discovers her killer's identity. Happy Death Day is directed by Christopher Landon (Paranormal Activity: The Marked Ones) and written by Scott Lobdell and Landon.
"Happy Death Day" follows the premise of "Groundhog Day" (Which I've never watched...oops), as Tree tries to figure out who her killer is. It's totally a cool concept that we've seen before and while it's not the best, it's also not that bad. If you go into this movie looking for some fun and some really nice moments, I think you'll get that here. It's not going to win anyone over but it's not that bad.
Let's start with the story. While I wasn't too invested throughout the first half, it caught my attention more during the second half. We get to see this character grow and develop as this causes her to evaluate her own life. I love seeing that growth and the change in her character by the time the film reaches its close. It actually gave for some really strong moments.
This movie is what it is. It has some cringey moments and in the end, I don't really understand all of it. Maybe it's because I was tired when I watched it or what, but the plot seemed to drag itself sometimes. I thought the acting was good in this film and like I said, for what it is, it's not bad! I know I've said that a lot and it's probably gotten annoying but really, it's the truth.
In the end, "Happy Death Day" isn't a bad flick and something you can put on when you want to relax or shut your mind off. That'll mean different things to different people but in the end, this movie was just average.
