Review of Hansel and Gretel (1988) by Augustina S — 07 Dec 2015
This version of Hansel and Gretel is watered down to be more kid-friendly, which means it includes some utterly ridiculous elements in order to work around the dark material and instances of death (i.e.
the downright silly concept of the gingerbread children). Still, this did entertain me, much to my surprise, and I found some moments to be genuinely terrifying, like when Hansel and Gretel spend the night in the forest and when they first discover the witch.
The witch is actually quite scary, too, which certainly helps. The happily-ever-after thing at the end was a bit annoying and rushed, and I think the mother might be the most unlikable character in all of cinematic history, but I still think this is a great movie for children.
