Review of Hannibal (2001) by Matthew R — 14 Apr 2010
Don't get me wrong, Hannibal is a good movie, it's a very well-crafted thriller, with a intriuging story, good cast, and loads upon loads of suspense, but in my opinion and probably many others opinions, it didn't really live up to The Silence of the Lambs.
10 years later, Lecter is still on the loose, Clarice Starling (who is played by Julianne Moore) is still in the FBI. Lecter soon contacts Clarice after he realizes that he's the target of a revenge plot by his only living victim. That's part of the story but I don't want to spoil the whole movie, Jodie Foster's character is missing, Julianne Moore is a good actress, but I don't think she plays the part of Clarice half as well as Foster did. Anthony Hopkins is now a serial killer instead of a sinister psychological genius, his character in Hannibal is still creepy, but not as half as creepy as it was in The Silence. Hannibal was a fairly good movie with many flaws, I think it could have been much better if they toned down on the gore and toned up the suspense, and if Jodie Foster played Clarice. But if you liked Silence of the Lambs, you should enjoy Hannibal.
