Review of Hannibal (2001) by Peter N — 31 Jul 2012
Well....as a fan of both the literary and cinematic versions of the previous entries in the series, I am hugely disappointed by the conclusion of the Hannibal Lecter saga. The filmmakers really didn't have much to work with, as the novel this film is based on is a complete mess, both versions try to scare the audience through gore instead of the psychological terror that provided the foundation of the previous entries.
The film itself seems sloppy and uninspired, and really doesn't know what direction it's going in. Anthony Hopkins' portrayal of Hannibal is still truly terrifying, yet I can't help but think that he's much better than this.
Maybe it would have been better had he followed in the footsteps of Jodi Foster and Jonathan Demme, both of whom wisely avoided having anything to do with this film.
