Review of Hannibal (2001) by Ed C — 11 Dec 2012
I have mixed emotions towards this movie. The repeated viewings hasn't helped much. I tried to to like this movie a little more but in the end, it's just a 3 star movie, just passable but not decent. Some things about this movie worked really well, some just didn't work. I could forgive the recasting for the Clarice Starling role because Julianne Moore was really great in it, but I prefer Jodie Foster.Hopkins as Lecter was great and I really liked the Mason Verger chracter. I liked the revenge plot in this movie and I thoguht it worked well. I thought the incident with Clarice in the beginning of the movie worked well all the stuff about her being ashamed or being treated unfairly in the FBI and her change of personality worked well.
What didn't work was Hannibal in Italy. I didn't enjoy that part of the movie as much. I think they took the wrong approach in some parts of the movie , showing too much gore, they really took a different approach from Silence of the Lambs. There's no thrills , just a few chills but overall this movie is just a hit and miss. Somethings work well lie the Clarice/FBI stuff, Revenge Plot, and Lecter/Clarice parts of the movie. The rest of the movie just doesn't work, they simply took the wrong approach to it and it backfired. One thing I did like though was the ending, powerful, good stuff but the movie just stunk during the middle.
