Review of Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) by Friedl K — 23 Jun 2008
Excellent, classic Woody Allen. Funny, painful, witty, original & a surprisingly sweet ending.
Characters & their familial relations are excellently observed & implied. The movie's structure is wonderfully sprawling & novel-ish. Chaotic yet focused. Hilarious yet intimate.
Whole cast is typically amazing. From all the leads to the smallest characters. Dianne Wiest stands out for making her eccentric, insecure Holly neurotic yet lovable but never a caricature. She never gives the same reaction twice, & her performance feels spontaneous, convincing, very funny, very detailed & totally convincing.
But Mia Farrow, Michael Caine, Barbara Hershey & Woody Allen are all more than solid. Michael Caine is also particularly impressive, managing to remain likable & showing the chaos invading his character's life.
Regardless of how I feel about Allen's world-views, he delivers this one with so much honesty & compassion, I love going along for the ride.
