Review of Hannah and Her Sisters (1986) by Shane D — 01 Apr 2011
I enjoyed it yes. It was very pleasant. Like going to a really well to do friends place and eating lots of cheese and really really fine wine. Then spending the whole night talking about books. Which means, its not something I would (rightly or wrongly) want to do all the time.
I get that even slightly criticising an Allen film from this period raises the ire of many, but I did find a lot about this story to be unrelatable and unrealistic. For one, the seemingly acceptable incestuous nature of the relationships of the characters seemed odd.
Allen's character also seemed pointless for most of the film and even though he ended up back in the fold in the end, he felt tacked on. Having said that though, some of his closing monologues about life and love I really connected with and enjoyed.
It was fun watching Caine act in something NOT ridiculous AND the female lead cast were great.
