Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Ryan G — 05 May 2009
This comedy directly satirizes one of my least favorite genres of film, the "inspiring teacher manages to reach a challenging student population" movie (think Mr. Holland's Opus, Dangerous Minds, or Dead Poet's Society).
While it is fundamentally a dark comedy and is quite profane in places, it is ultimately sweet and big-hearted. I really really enjoyed this film. In order to really appreciate it you have to be amused by Coogan's endless mugging - he is in every scene and nearly always emoting in a cartoonishly overdone way - but I was.
Highly recommended.
