Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Keven S — 17 Nov 2009
I love how Hamlet 2 can be so ridiculous and still manage to tell a wonderful and inspiratinal underdog story. Steve Coogan is fantastic and I'm kind of shocked he didn't blow up after his starring role here - he deserves it.
The film has a few gags that feel somewhat stale and out of place, but it also has a ton of original humour and I think the randomness of where the plot takes us is only for the better. The twisted play that Coogan's character writes for his highschool class may seem offensive at first, but when you see it acted out at the end you have to applaud his effort and the fight to get his maniacal story on stage.
The film is more than just comedy, even though that's where it works most of the time, it's also a huge statement for free speech when it comes to art. That sentence alone shows that a movie as ridiculous as Hamlet 2 deserves to be given a shot - there's more going on here than at first glance.
