Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Thom M — 23 Oct 2010
For the most part, typical and predictable. Though not a bad move, Hamlet 2 struggles with being slightly better than average. A fantastic idea on paper and character for Steve Coogan to portray, as well as a movie that I just couldn't help but wish more from. From seeing the trailer, I was hoping for something ridiculous and over the top, considering the subject and aspects of the films. The end product is a movie filled with some very good pops that ultimately fizzly due to too many slow beats.
Just when you think you're getting a good high and pace from the story and characters, scenes will drag or feel poorly edited. I don't need to see Coogan fall down on roller skates umpteenth amount of times, give me some more chracter work! The cast is full of characters who are all interesting with potential in their own right but fail to develop properly, rather falling back on typical dynamics that hold back this film from being anything amazing.Gary and his protein shakes made for a good glorified Arquette cameo. And the thoughts on Arizona are oh so sadly true. High hopes for Hamlet Dos translated to not too bad of a disappointment, still worth checking out.
