Review of Hamlet 2 (2008) by Jon W — 23 Jan 2011
Sporadically funny spoof of "inspirational teacher" flicks as Steve Coogan's failed actor, failing drama teacher and all round delusional loser decides to stop putting on school plays based on hit movies and write his own. He comes up with the titular opus, wherein the Dane uses a time machine to change the ending of Shakespeare's original and team up with Jesus. Yes, really.
It's a bit of a one-man show. Coogan is in every scene, and apart from Amy Poehler's sweary lawyer and Elisabeth Shue as "herself", the supporting cast barely registers. Sometimes it drags, and sometimes it misfires, but when it comes to opening night, featuring musical numbers such as "Raped in the Face" and "Rock Me Sexy Jesus" it's hard to stifle a giggle.
