Review of Hamlet (1996) by Arlene S — 04 Jan 2008
This is a really good, perhaps overly elaborate adaptation of Shakespeare's greatest play, using the full text. Branagh's direction is always good with sparks of genius, and he is a very good Hamlet.
Derek Jacobi is brilliant as Claudius. There was some miscasting and the ending, with Fortinbras invading Denmark, is totally unsupported by the text, but on the whole it is a beautiful film and quite a good interpretation of "Hamlet.
