Review of Hamlet (1990) by Wesley D — 02 Apr 2011
Mel Gibson is surprisingly effective as the Danish prince, aided by a strong cast, including the always reliable Glenn Close and some of Britain's finest (Alan Bates, Paul Scofield, Ian Holm, a young Helena Bonham Carter).
Franco Zeffirelli (who also helmed the classic 1968 version of Romeo & Juliet) still has knack for turning the centuries old tale into a palatable piece of filmmaking for regular audience. However, fans might not appreciated his several cuts and alterations.
