Review of Hamlet (1990) by David L — 14 Sep 2007
Mel Gibson was anxious to get away from characters like Martin Riggs from Lethal Weapon after doing films like Air America, Tequila Sunrise and Bird On A Wire, so he does a 360 and tries Shakespeare and it doesn't really work.
Hamlet is difficult to do in movie form anyway because its SO long and plus Mel just isn't very convincing as the Dane Prince. Glenn Close was good in the role as Hamlet's controlling mother Gertrude, but this is not worth seeing unless your a die hard Mel fan.
A Hamlet production from Mel with Robert Downey Jr in the role, that was talked about 5 years ago, sounds more promising but I haven't heard anything on that front lately.
