Review of Hamburger Hill (1987) by Dave R — 06 Jan 2009
A good war movie, but not a feel-good war movie. it's episodic rather than a sweeping, unified narrative. it comes from the later cycle of vietnam war movies that could be characterized as nihilistic - like "platoon" and "full metal jacket". one of the expressions the men in this movie say over and over is: "it don't mean nothing" it doesn't get much more nihilistic than that.
The perspective here is that of the enlisted soldiers -not the officers. as a former enlisted man for 7 years in the army I can tell you that they way they talk, act, the tensions between race and class are all real.
