Review of Halloween: The Curse of Michael Myers (1995) by Brian F — 20 Oct 2012
What would happen if Michael Myers became a product of the early 90's MTV generation? Halloween 6: The Curse of Michael Myers is what!
While this films identity is most certainly that of a Halloween film, it also has become a trashy pop culture horror flop where Michael is no longer a scare monger, a hack and slash kinda guy. With this film he becomes something much worse a trashy slasher who's out to spill as much blood and guts as the MPAA can stomach!
Director Joe Chapelle wanted hip Michael Myers up, give Halloween a new lease of life. After Halloween 5 who could argue with that? However what Chapelle delivers is something so alien it's untrue.
The nature of the beast has changed, the music is far too MTV, the blood is more Friday The 13th than what Halloween has been used to and while it might be natural progression to keep up with the times by adding more gore, with Halloween less has always been more.
The story is a thing of many fan debate. Druids, runes and cults are all to do with Michael Myers being the serial killer he is and while it's nice this film tries to tie up all those loose ends from the previous five the film never builds enough tension or momentum to become anything more than tedious.
A great turn by both Donald Pleasence in quite possibly his shortest turn as the good doctor and Paul Rudd as Tommy Doyle really keep the film from completely flatlining. Along with some super cool cinematography and Michael Myers looking creepy in some shots even though he does look as though between every Halloween he spends his time as McDonalds, the film is a let down.
I would only recommend this to the die hard fans of Halloween but any average movie goer looking for some horror thrills, well switch on Kerrang and watch a Slipknot music video, it'll probably make more sense and be much more horrific!
