Review of Halloween III: Season of the Witch (1982) by Mike M — 26 Oct 2012
The black sheep of the Halloween family of flicks, given that it is the only one not to feature the Michael Myers killing machine, truly deserves a better reputation. Producers initially wanted this to be the first in a series of movies to be released annually, to be called Halloween, and dealing with some new story related to the holiday; however, poor audience reaction to a Myers-less third installment doomed that aim.
Nonetheless, much of the same Halloween production crew was back (including the fine work of DP Dean Cundey) and, in the end, the result plays as an EC Comic-like tale of a toymaker's dastardly plan to sacrifice the children of the world for witchcraft using Don Post masks .
. . and there's a Stonehenge rock involved . . . with bugs that come out of masks . . . and there's this chip inside the masks that somehow creates the bugs or something - hey! Let's not let logic bog down a creepy tale.
Halloween III was doomed from the start simply because of its name - not its fun content. Shout Factory's Special Edition DVD features a good making-of. Oh, and there's that song . . .
