Review of Halloween II (1981) by Alexander J — 14 Jun 2009
After seeing some of the reviews here, all I have to say is that this film is underrated. While it may not have that same sort of call as the original movie, it does place it into an entirely new perspective. There is a new music soundtrack, a great storyline, a wonderful cast of actors, and a variety of scare moments with no repetition.
It begins where Mike's doctor is baffled about the escape and survival of his once-understood patient. The killing spree continues as the rampage murderer continues his wreckless assault amongst the city civilians.
So, once again, the doctor must find Mike Myers and destroy him, but he does not know his whereabouts. He gets some clues along the way, but not without trouble (I won't spoil it, lolz).
Mike Myers escaped from the institute in the first movie to search for his long-lost sister for retribution (to murder her). In this sequel, he knows where his sister is right away. Okay... that's kind of odd. How is it that he knows where everything is? He must be some sort of human-detecter.
But that is what makes the film so great: an unstoppable evil on the loose. Sometimes what we think of as "common" isn't what it seems to be, as played out by the villain's strength and foreshadowed figure approach.
What should be considered in note is how well-played the movie lighting is. Mike Myer's wears the same mask as in the 1st film, but looks different because of the lights used. Now that is creative! It almost makes him look like a different person! Same person, different viewpoint!
The ending was awesome, with Mike Myers defeated and the credits start rolling. It feels just like Terminator 2, the kind of film you watch 'till the end of the long credits. That's hard to find even in some of the "good" movies.
What I liked about this film is how they focused on the minor characters of the movie. You have the janitors, the nurses, Mike's sister, and others more. Very well done. Some real funny moments with them, but I won't spoil it for you.
The music soundtrack is basically the same, but with different sounds. While it may seem pointless to some movie goers who expect something completely arrayed and young, I must say that the choice of sound used in the soundtrack was chosen with care.
As said above, there is a variety of Mike's killing spree. You constantly have to keep on your toes while watching, and it makes for a whole new sequel to the original with some twists. There is blood in this movie, but you still get that suspense feeling while watching other masterpieces such as "The Ring" or "Psycho.".
In conclusion, I highly recommend this cinematic masterpiece to anyone interested in the horror genre. It is a great sequel to the first and original classic, and will be beloved by fans and average movie watchers alike.
