Review of Halloween (2018) by Gregory E — 21 Oct 2018
I'm not gonna lie. I was quite afraid that Danny McBride and David Gordon Green would end up creating their distinctive kind of edgy dark gore comedy, pulling away from the mythology of the original movie.
I'm glad I was pretty wrong. 40 years later, this Halloween works as an almost perfect mirror of Carpenter's original piece. This is not only a thematic mirror but even a concrete visual one. Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis is just amazing) is the perfect echo of Michael Myers. She's the stalker of the light. She takes the boogeyman's place several times, but with a completely opposite intention.
This is a tale of empowerment of the victim in the #MeToo era. And for the fragile masculinities that can be somehow be bothered by this, don't worry: Good Ol' Mike meets a fairly large bloody quota.
My sole criticism with "Halloween" is its little commitment bookending the story, eliminating the possibility of creating a perfect duology. The chance of a direct sequel obviously implied a dose of bittersweet ambiguity.
