Review of Halloween (2018) by Christian B — 18 Oct 2018
I'm always skeptical of remakes and reboots, but this was something different. From the beginning the energy and vibe is completely in line with the original but adjusts its tone to fit comfortably in the times. The kills are more gruesome and yet subtle enough to leave alot to your imagination. The characters are solid and well flushed out and given just enough interaction in the downtime for us to care about their wellbeing.
The action kicks off early and even though there are several nods to the original, they are done in a way to make them feel unique to the new story.
The most impactful part of the whole film was the impression I got of the power of Michael Meyers. Hes a beast, and for a 60 year old man who has been cataonic for 40 years to destroy people with such ease shows that there is something more behind him than just meerly a killer. But the film never tries to explain it to us, and its that mystery that made this film so powerful in the first place.
I've seen it twice already and will probably see it 3 more times, its just that good, it truly is, "a good film".
On the downside I will agree with some of the critiques of the discount Dr. Loomis character, he feels ok in the beginning prison scene, but his continued presence in the film as well as his "turn" feels off and out of place, and I feel with more time in the writing a bridge could have been written that would have facilitated the arc that his character presented.
