Considering how pivotal the original is for the genre, it was always risky business going in for a remake of Halloween, however the man to do it, would no doubt be Rob Zombie. A man with a passion for horror, brutality and striking visuals.

He could have made something really original and special out of this, however he doesn't, he tries, he just doesn't succeed. He gets the ball of rolling well right enough, deciding to give Michael Myers a back story and motive behind his future being and you have to give Zombie credit for going against the expected and trying to create a different film.

We see Michael grow to be the killer he is, his relationship with Dr Loomis and his bloody and brutal escape. Michael himself has also gone through a transformation, no longer is he the skinny, mystical unstoppable killer, he's a panzer tank, which Rob plays on and so he should.

The problems come in the second act, after all that effort to try a different angle we go through a carbon copy of carpenters the original, ok there are a few Zombie-isms and additions on the way but nothing worth note, nothing that alters the next hours proceedings to such a degree of unpredictability.

Before switching it up kind of in the final act, yet again show casing his tank of a villian. Its all well and good and looks stunning, with frightening images galour but yet again, Zombies script brutalizes your ears.

He's gotten worse since Rejects, adding in vulgarities for no reason, slotting in things that people just wouldn't do or say to each other in a real life situation and this cheapens it. Albeit had he went and made this a balls out zombie movie rather than half him half homage the scripting could have worked well, inside a demonic hell visualized by the creator of Rejects.

All in all its ok, performances are good enough, with a nice turn by Danny Trejo but when its all said and done, its just a missed opportunity. A Rob Zombie fan only kind of movie.
