Review of Halloween (2007) by Jake H — 10 Nov 2014
As far as most horror movie reboots (or sequels in general) go, Rob Zombie's Halloween really isn't all that bad.
I mean sure, it boasts far more style than substance, but as a fan of the original John Carpenter version, I feel comfortable saying that this is a faithful remake that does a number of things right. Firstly, the film visually looks great, and captures the same feel and tone of the original, and all the characters are well casted, and surprisingly well acted. The murder scenes are also far more brutal than any of the franchise's previous films. I mean seriously, the sheer ferocity in which those scenes are done was enough to shock me pretty thoroughly. What I really like about this movie, however, is that it gives the viewer a chance to see the person behind the mask, and see what really turned him into a monster. One of my main complaints with the majority of horror films (apart from the well established genre cliches) is that the killer is just a dude in a mask that slaughters people for no reason. It was an uncommonly smart move, and the film pulled it off very well.
Overall, Halloween isn't perfect, but it is a pretty fun, gory, twisted ride that is faithful to the original. If you like horror movies, I'd suggest giving this one a shot.
