Review of Halloween (2007) by Rob M — 02 Sep 2017
Rob Zombie's vision for his take on Halloween and Michael Myers is vastly different than John Carpenter's. Carpenter worked in the model of suspense with minimal gore; Zombie works on a model of both suspense and gore.
The violence here though is visceral and pointed. The characters are well etched; Zombie gives us a great back story to Michael Myers, even though it is sometimes frustrating (like many of his films) when we don't know an exact time frame for when things are happening.
Zombie also adds a sense of sympathy for the injured and provides jarring jolts and a debilitating conclusion that lead us further into the understanding of the mystique of a legendary horror icon. Scout Taylor-Compton is a memorable Laurie Strode and Malcolm McDowell is a nice touch as the complex Dr.
Loomis.
