Review of Halloween (2007) by Tim S — 10 Oct 2014
Halloween 2007 is the controversial remake of the classic original film. Now while I don't consider myself to be a Halloween aficionado, or rather a die-hard fan of this series, I am very much a fan of the original film.
That film, even with the flaws that it has, is a masterpiece of storytelling. But this remake seems interested in taking the best parts of that film and doing something new, which I actually don't have a problem with.
It's when a remake is a direct copy cat of the original is when I wonder why anyone bothers. This doesn't do that, but it's definitely not that favorable. Michael Myers' backstory is told in the first half of the film while his murderous rampage through Haddonfield is told through the second half.
The film also features far too many horror and screen icons that it takes me out of every scene that they're in. Most of the characters, especially the teenage characters, are over-the-top and have little to no substance to them whatsoever, making them feel alien and nondescript, unlike the original film wherein the characters are clearly defined and have sufficient motivation.
The film looks good enough, but lacks any sort of real reason for its useless existence. Like nearly all remakes, I'd say just skip it and watch the original instead. You'll be better off.
