Review of Halloween (1978) by Perk8J — 30 Mar 2021
John Carpenter and Debra Hill take a page out of Alfred Hitchcock's playbook and refrain from excessive gore in Halloween (1978). Halloween centers on a psychiatrist, Dr. Samuel Loomis (Donald Pleasance), who is preventing his escaped patient Michael Myers (Nick Castle) from wrecking havoc on October 31st, 1978.
Unfortunately, Loomis isn't entirely successful as Myers stalks Laurie Strode (Jamie Lee Curtis) and her friends. Both Dr. Loomis and Laurie Strode serve as protectors in the film, and Strode has to survive the night to protect not only herself, but Lindsey Wallace (Kyle Richards) and Tommy Doyle (Brian Andrews) from the deranged Michael Myers.
The role Loomis plays is vital because he knows more about Myers than the audience does. Therefor, it's Loomis and Sheriff Brackett (Charles Cyphers) trying to stop evil from conquering the fictional town of Haddenfield, Illinois.
Whether or not evil prevails is up to viewer interpretation.
