Review of Hall Pass (2011) by Maksim B — 11 Oct 2011
The latest Farrelly Brothers movie is just another R-rated comedy in a time when this comedy sub-genre has become almost a mainstream. Hall Pass is a mediocre, yet watchable, comedy which trails way below the high originality and fun level of the recent R-rated comedies.
Bobby and Peter Farrelly have decided to focus on destroying the traditional family values by bringing a combination of two infantile husbands, some nasty masturbation humor with sex related gags, and of course the very predictable happy-romantic-end. The movie actually, is almost a successful shot on monogamy and the everlasting male desire to knock up everything that moves around.
Unfortunately, nothing of the promising beginning is materialized when Owen Wilson and Jason Sudeikis receive their Hall Pass. Instead of receiving a wild second half, which could only be compared to The Hangover, all we get is an impotent and quite unfunny romantic & dramatic second half. This results a boring second half, in which only Owen Wilson's presence is to be pointed out.
Hall Pass could have been much better and much funnier comedy, but its sharpless second half deprives it from being something more than a mediocre comedy.
