Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Ai H — 08 Jan 2009
It's a... strange film. I mean, I have to watch it 4 times to finish it, yawning all the way I could cry, asking myself, "What the hell am I watching?" and after it finished, when I thought about what I saw, it grew on me.
"Half Nelson", get blocked and have to put up a fight to get out, to save yourself... But still, a hand is freed to reach out... Is that the meaning of this film? `Cause when it comes to saving, I think the two characters save each other better than save themselves, two lonely souls somehow finding peace in each other and in them, I find warmth and belief, that in some way I want to be saved, too...
The thing I found most interesting while watching is acting of Ryan Gosling and Shareeka Epps. Gosling didn't let me down and Epps is quite a nice surprise. Anyway, because of the slow pace and much subtlety, this film won't appeal too much to some people, but it might be one of the best films of 2006.
