Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Rob J — 04 Feb 2011
A character movie based on a lonely drug-addicted teacher bonding with one of his students who discovers his secrets. Gosling and Epps performances are subtle and powerful. There are moments when you get to see the potential of Gosling's character (when discussing historical forces; when challenging the local drug dealer, etc) but, ultimately, this is a movie about wasted life.
The movie is interspersed with references to the civil rights movement, anti-Vietnam protests, and the Stop the War movement. Gosling's Dan attempts to inspire his students during the day while numbing his senses with crack cocaine binges by night. The failure of institutional authority is damning.
