Review of Half Nelson (2006) by Kyle A — 17 Oct 2011
"Half Nelson" is nothing short of brilliant and uncompromising. Gossling headlines a cast of top notch performances, including one by young Shareeka Epps. The whole cast is spectacular in this film about a challenging teacher who succumbs to drugs.
What makes this movie stand out is Gossling's slow downward spiral. One that almost seems innocent enough to not matter at its beginning, only to cruise into oblivion near the films end. As a teacher, he tells his students about how the world changes radically.
As a person he changes radically too, and while he doesn't have moments like the assassination of Harvey Milk in his personal history, he has moments of his own that work on a person level. "Half Nelson" is a true gem of a film.
