Review of Half Nelson (1985) by Jack C — 05 Sep 2008
There's something about Ryan Gosling that just makes him cool. I don't know what it is, I don't know how to explain it but he just is. No more so than in this indie hit, "Half Nelson".
He plays a drug-addled school teacher in an inner city New York school whose life is a seemingly cyclical affair which includes drugs, teaching and more drugs. That is until he meets young Drey (played excellently by Shareeka Epps) and forms a strong bond with her.
He eventually manages to turn his life around but not in the cliched way you might expect. It's fresh and original and a great drama. Well done independent cinema! Live long and prosper!
