Review of Hail the Conquering Hero (1944) by Steve W — 18 Oct 2015
Woodrow Truesmith buys a round for some penniless marines, and tells them his sorrowful tale of how his mother and small town think he's still a marine. He got discharged for hay fever and hasn't got the guts to face the music, because of the hero status of his late father.
The movie is wonderfully hilarious for the first half, but quickly loses steam in the jokes department and gets a little heavy handed for the finale. It does have that good hearted feeling at the end, so ultimately this comedy is decent overall.
