Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Scott R — 04 Jun 2016
This film doesn't match the insight and wit of Lebowski, Fargo or even Llewyn Davis. It is, at best, a mildly funny satire of old-school American industry. Its attempts at poststructuralist critique of 20th-century America are obvious, but it's not clear whether or not this is done ironically.
Nevertheless, it offers nothing profound. Luckily, the performances of a brilliant cast do save the film somewhat. Channing Tatum (perhaps surprisingly) creates some of the best moments in the film, as does Ralph Fiennes.
George Clooney's presence doesn't really add anything to the rather unimaginative plot.
