Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Dominic L — 24 Mar 2016
The Coen brothers do it again with a fine, gentle comedy that pokes fun at Hollywood of the 1940s. It follows trials and tribulations of Eddie Mannix, a studio boss who has to manage the lives and egos of the various stars of the silver screen working for him.
The studio is in the middle of making a Biblical epic when their big box office star, Baird Whitlock goes missing. There are some delightfully witty moments and the cast is truly superb. Ralph Fiennes, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Scarlett Johannson and, Coen stalwart, Frances Mcdormand all smash their performances.
Channing Tatum and Alden Ehrenreich also put in good turns in what in a real ensemble performance. I loved this film and was laughing and giggling the whole way through. What makes this more than just a comedy is the deft way in which Ethan and Joel Coen manage to give the central character real depth.
This is as much a movie about the passions of a man who lives, eats and breathes his job as it is a comedy about a Hollywood golden age. It is a real love letter to some of the great studios of the past made by two of the finest filmmakers of the modern age.
