Review of Hail, Caesar! (2016) by Tim G — 12 Jul 2016
As an ode to the Golden Age of Hollywood and the Coen Brothers' own devotion to detail, "Hail, Caesar!" is the most charming tribute to cinema money can buy - but money can't always buy you love.
Part commentary on McCarthy-era witch-hunting and part salute to moviemaking, Josh Brolin, Channing Tatum, Alden Ehrenreich, George Clooney round out a quirky ensemble cast that never cease to delight, if nothing else.
In its attempts at political parody, "Hail, Caesar!" falls short of its lofty intentions, coming off as an eye-catching montage of catchy musical numbers and pretty scene setting than a criticism on the industry it celebrates.
"Hail, Caesar!" simply loves Hollywood too much to take a jab where needed, but nostalgia for nostalgia's sake isn't a crime it should be convicted for. "Hail, Caesar!"'s cheery disposition is something to be admired as a fun-loving popcorn flick with something to say - if only it would simply say it.
