Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Joshua M — 25 Feb 2017
I really wanted to hate this one given the fact that it was directed by a raging anti-semite, but found myself enthralled by it anyway. I've long been a sucker for American Historioaction Flicks, and this one does not disappoint on the WAR IS HELL angle (as one might expect from the guy that directed a 3 hour long bondage porn flick starring Jesus Christ).
However, it also has the human touch necessary for a movie about a conscientious objector (itself an immensely human idea), although Andrew Garfield gets 100% of the credit there. This really is his movie, every other character serves to prop up his own.
It is an evolution for a character that has been long overdue to break out of the petulant adolescent roles he has been cast in to this point, and it is a stellar performance indeed. Still, Mel Gibson loses it a star.
