Review of Hacksaw Ridge (2016) by Mark D — 11 Mar 2017

Well, isn't this an overrated film. It's not bad. Just not what I was expecting.

I should have known better with Mel Gibson directing.

This feels like an indie Jesus movie that happened to obtain bigger funding than normal.

It's preachy as hell, with constant mentions of the bible, and the main characters faith. A faith which supposedly prevents him from touching a gun. Funny how this doesn't stop millions of other Christians from doing so.

I understand that this really is based on a true story, but the movie is still incredibly manipulative in how it tells the tale. It's full of classic war movie cliches, and corny stereotypes.

And why the hell is Vince Vaughn in this?! Like, WTF? As the drill sergeant, no less. It just makes it feel like we are suddenly in a comedy or something. Terrible choice of actor there.

Overall, this is a very mediocre war movie, with lots of violence, about a real person who did real heroic things. Good for him, of course, for being awesome, but this movie just makes him into a bit of a farce.
